Eastern Screech Owl
Do you know what is better than all of the Orlando vacations in the world? Finding this little fellow roosting in your barn,
I have heard Eastern Screech Owls in the trees by our creek on many occasions. This is the first time one has ventured near the house let alone in the barn. This makes me a little bit nervous with all of the small kittens running around though. They would make tasty owl snacks. Despite that concern it was a delight to find this little guy watching the kids as they cleaned out the hay mow. Screech Owls are known to eat a lot of European starlings and we have plenty of those around! If he can cut down on that population a bit, he is welcome in our barn as long as he likes. The strange thing is screech owls are cavity nesters so I am not sure why he is in our barn. Perhaps there is a nest of them in one of our old maples and the barn was just a convenient resting spot.
