Eagle Encounter
I know you have all been waiting for me to post some Bald Eagle shots. I managed to get some on Monday. My 11 year old daughter and I walked down to the boat ramp and took some shots. We just don’t own a camera that has enough zoom to get good detailed shots so these are not the best. But it was an amazing experience to be that close to these birds in the wild. We stopped around mid morning which is generally the time that they are fishing. We saw some eagles fishing and lots of them perched in trees along the river as well as flying overhead. I didn’t bother to count how many eagles we saw but I would say upwards of 50.

This eagle was in a tree a couple miles east of the river. We stopped just to take a picture. On the way home we saw an eagle even farther from the river than that in a tree.

If you look closely there is a third eagle in this picture. It flew off just as I was setting up the shot. It is in the lower part of the picture near the tree trunk.

This is the same shot as above only I zoomed it in a bit. The eagle on the left is immature and does not sport the white head and tail feathers.

This tree was full of eagles that were flying in and out across the river to fish. We didn’t dare get any closer for fear of disturbing them. It was a much more incredible sight than this photo depicts.

How incredibly amazing and awesome (in the true sense of the word, not the “awesome, dude!” sense of the word)
Thank you so much for sharing that with us!
I’ve been meaning to send my mom here and keep forgetting - today I won’t forget!!
She’s the one who struck up my interest in birds - even took me birding at a nature park at like 5 or 6 in the morning. That was cool - we still talk about the painted bunting that started that walk!!

[...] I want to point you to another of my blogs. I know some of you are aware of it already and do visit, but for the rest of you here is an introduction. Twitterpated is a blog dedicated to birds and birding. This blog stemmed from a conversation in which I was trying to identify a bird from a picture that a friend had taken. I had been wanting to start a new blog but was unsure what the topic would be. It hit me that I needed to write about my fascination with birds. So Twitterpated was born. It has been a much harder blog to author because it has but one focus. However, the challenge is fun and I love to do research. Most recently I have shared some pictures of bald eagles that I took. Please visit my new blog and keep returning! You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 feed. You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site. [...]

Loved them! Lisa did point me to this as she said she would. I’ve only seen 2 in my whole life! I can imagine what it mush have been like to experience so many at once. Every summer I go to a preserve next to our city teaching hospital in the middle of Dallas. (The person who donated the land for the hospital did it with the provision that a specific area would never be built on.) There are zillions of mating herons there and it’s a spectacular site. Granted, not bald eagles, but beautiful nevertheless.

AS I have stated before, I love to bird watch. We have a birdbath that I can see from the window over the sink, needless to say I spend a lot of time there not doing sink stuff. Thank you for doing this blog!! I try to go everyday to see what is new. Great pics.

[...] I saw a bird in the yard the other day and couldn’t quite figure out what kind it was. I decided to go check out my favorite bird blog (and yes, I’ve almost found a blog for everything I can think of) to see if she knew. I sent her a message so I’m hoping to hear back from her soon. The blog is called Twitter Pated (not real sure what it means) but I love to check it out. I don’t get to check it out every day but I do have it in my Google Reader in case something really cool pops up. Like last month when she found a whole bunch of bald eagles and got a bunch of really cool pictures. Go check out the eagle pictures, they are really cool. [...]

[...] I bought my son a pair of binoculars for his birthday. I did it because he is so into seeing things up close and personal. I was inspired to teach him more about the birds outside, too. Where did it come from? Well a lot of it came from reading Twitterpated. That blog has some neat pictures of birds. I love the layout, too *wink, I should, I made it*. ANYWAY I have been thinking about taking my son to a national zoo so he can see even more birds up close. I would love for him to see an eagle. [...]

[...] Do you remember my pictures of bald eagles from last year? They were really not that great. But at the time I used the best equipment that I had. This year I have a much better camera that zooms in much farther. Comparing the two cameras is like comparing the first projection televisions to the current ones. There just isn’t any comparison. So be prepared for some spectacular photos of eagles in a few months! [...]
