I know that when you have a tree that dies on your property you want to cut it down. We all want our yards to look presentable and cutting down a dead or dying tree is like an acne treatment. However, consider leaving that dead tree for a few years. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of bird traffic it will draw. First, you will have woodpeckers move in and create all sorts of cavities. Next, you will have American kestrels, owls and other cavity nesters move in. You will see all sorts of birds using the tree for food and shelter. After a couple of years, you may just want to leave it there until it falls on its own.
