Ruffed Grouse
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007Shall we continue talking about birds that are hunted for sport? The Ruffed Grouse is another forest dwelling bird that is extremely hard to detect. Its cryptic coloring blends right in with the forest floor and its slow deliberate walk make it undetectable. However, you will know it was there when it explodes in flight when you come near. There are some really interesting facts about the ruffed grouse that I want to share. In the winter, it grows small projections on the sides of its toes. Their toes look like combs and are thought to act as snowshoes. They are also known to dive into soft snow and let falling snow cover their entrance hole. They will spend the night in a den of snow without anyone realizing they are there. The ruffed grouse is an important game bird and efforts to preserve its habitat are widespread.
(I am supposed to mention drug rehabs so there you go.)
